This week in numeracy we will be investigating square numbers, finding out what they are and how we can make them. Hopefully this will be helpful to all of us working on our level 4 CLIC sheets in Big Maths! Watch the video below to find out exactly what square numbers are.
As well as this, we will be practicing our written methods for multiplication by looking at grid method.Click hereto investigate grid method and how we can use it to solve multiplication questions.

Rachel, if you click on the link at the bottom of this post (under the video) it will take you to a grid method activity which you can use to find larger square numbers eg 22 x 22.
Give it a go and tell me what you think,

I find square numbers quite easy now! I just need to learn factor numbers! I get muddled up about Square numbers and Factor numbers.

That's great to hear Tamzin! I will add a factors game for you to see if that helps you with your understanding of factors. Hopefully, you will find it useful.

Rachel, have you had a go of the game I have added to the top of the blog? It may be helpful to help you understand factors some more. Have a go and let me know how you get on and if it makes thing any clearer. It seems to be something that your group would like to develop therefore I can make sure I include it in our lessons or perhaps during a Big Maths session.

Mr Patterson I find smile multiplication easier! All you do is add a smile to the bottom of the numbers and is quite easy to work out so you don't have to use all those trickier things. :-)

Smile multiplication is very useful for multiplying two multiples of 10, I agree.
Unfortunately, we also need to be able to multiply other 2-digit and 3-digit numbers together (that aren't multiples of 10) as well. Grid method is essential for this.

Welcome to Year 5's blog at Tanfield Lea Community Primary School, a primary school in County Durham who want to broaden our horizons and to show the world what we have to offer.
Our September topic will be 'The Normans', looking at the history of the Norman periods and what we can learn about that time period using primary and secondary sources.
Our literacy will be based on the book 'Goodnight Mr Tom' by Michelle Magorian which takes place during the Second World War.
