MINECRAFT MONDAY!

Finally, after a lot of discussion earlier in the year, we will be taking a day to explore the education potential of Minecraft.

So many of you argued 'for' the game and fought of some excellent counter arguments by the girls.

Minecraft Monday will include.

Literacy: diary keeping / note making for descriptive writing and diary entires later in the week.

Numeracy: including area, perimeter, ratio, proportion, fractions, decimals and percentages.

Literacy: Non-chronological report writing - creating an information page in the style of the ever so popular books that have appeared in class all year long.

Below is our original discussion post (please not we can't add comments to this thread any more)

Digging Minecraft Style!

What a great debate. However, voting is now CLOSED! Thankyou to everyone who took part.

If you would like to join the debate, you will need to put your persuasive writing skills to the test and present an argument supporting Minecraft. Alternatively, you may wish to voice your opinions arguing against the game.

To take part you need to post your argument online or bring a hand written or printed version to the Year 5 classroom (it will be put on our 'Extended Learning Wall').

Remember a good arguments will include:
-A title.
-An opening paragraph or statement introducing your point of view.
-Paragraphs explaining each argument for or against. (Include facts to support your arguments and remember strong openers and connectives too!)
-A concluding sentence or paragraph summing up what you think!

I look forward to reading your ideas! (Not in Year 5? No problem. Feel free to take part as the discussion is open to all)

After some thought and reading pupil ideas for the use of Minecraft in the classroom, here are a few of the possibilities. I think there is plenty of potential.

I am sure you could write a much more persuasive and convincing argument than that Adam. Particularly, as I know you too have recently written a persuasive piece of writing in Year 6.

I'm afraid, on the strength of Lauren's argument, the case to buy Minecraft is currently behind.

Dear Mr Patterson,

NO I dont think we should have minecraft on the ipads because it is really boring and costs about £4.99 per game and my sister plays on it all the time so it would just annoy girls.

So i dont think we should have because all the boys go crazy about and i think it would be too much because some boys have minecraft books and they think isn't enough if i were them i would think a book is enough. Another thing, it drives girls mad and basically its just building things you can do that in the real world you can build things with bricks and LEGO, toys and lots more.

So me and some other girls will go mad if you let us have minecraft on the ipads. Furthermore, no boys would listen in lessons because they would be too interested in playing on minecraft so i think its just a bad idea to have minecraft on the ipads and i think its a silly game i don't know how people are interested in it. I think a better game would be games such as popplet and pic collage and show me because you can also do lots of work on it and you won't get distracted in leasson.

Therefore, you would be a fool to disagree with this so think really carefully and please pick no!

I fully expect there to be a lot of opinions on this debate!

Lauren has really set the standard high with her persuasive piece. She has written at length, has set her work out in paragraphs and has given good arguments for not buying Minecraft. Good use of openers and connectives too Lauren.

Boys (and girls), this is the quality of response I am hoping for.

yes please get minecraft it is a realy good game its very good for team work and building. t is a very good game for poeple to play on there is nearly everything in the world and there are updates to stop us getting bored . also it is very goood for the wreck of the zanzibar as you can find giant islands plus the fishing update just came out so the sea is better! so youd be a complete fool not to listen!

Debate update.
There have been a few posts submitted. They are arguing FOR Minecraft.

However, they aren't convincing enough (yet) to be approved and added to the debate.

Most are too short and cram a few reasons onto just one paragraph.

Try to choose three or four good reasons and write a paragraph explaining each one. Give examples if you can.

If you can remember an opening paragraph, that would be even better.

Use Lauren's as an example of the length and setting out that I am expecting.

minecraft is an exelent game it is very good for team work you cna do anything on it get mods textures and more plus updates keep the game fresh the last one was very good it will fit the wrecik of the zanzibar nicly. in addtion to this it is realy nice to talk to yuor friends and play so plz say yes it is a super game!

Also it is a good game to learn basic skills for games notch started on it when he was 7. so it would realy be nice to have minecraft in school,

yuo would be a fool not to listen!

I think we should get minecraft because it will help us with team work also it is a really good game it would make people listen in lessons therefore after they had listened to what they needed to do they could play on the game! Another reason, I think we should get it is because if we got it the girls who don't want to get it should like it if we get it they will probably enjoy minecraft.

Another advantage, for getting this game is because most people will like this game and idea of getting this game. Therefore it would be a shame to not get this game and let the people who wanted this game to miss out because of all the people that didn't want this game! Why do you not want to get this game?

Fantastic Drew. You have produced a solid argument 'for' Minecraft. I particularly like that you have argued it could be a good motivator for children as a reward for working hard.

Well done Shay. You have thought about your reasons to purchase Minecraft and I am very impressed that you listened to suggestions and improved your writing.

You have made some good points arguing for Minecraft therefore I will award you 1 point to the 'yes' side of the debate.

Just be careful to make sure you check your spellings before you post. You have a few typing errors. Also, use 'please' instead of 'plz'

Dear Mr Patterson,
I do not think we should Minecraft for the ipads because it is £4.99 per ipad so that would be about £100 so therefor it would be a bit to mulch for the school and what if we want new toys for the playground why spend money on this if we want play ground toys.

Another thing, why we should not get Minecraft for the Ipads is that there is better things that you can get that is free that pepole wiil not be addicted to and want to go on a ipad all the time

Why we should not have MINCRAFT!
I think we should not have Minecraft on the ipads because it is so EXPENSIVE! It is £4.99 now that's alot of money.Also,it is not what girls want anyway i think we should get a game that everyone likes instead of what boys like! However i have made my desicion and it is ... NO!

My first reason, why I should say no is because it is rubbish and not what everybody wants.As well as this, it is boring and some people might not know what to do with it and think it's confusing.Another thing,It dosen't really do much all it does is basically (NOTHING)!

My second thing, is that my brother (Micah) goes on the year 5 blog and dances to it all day (please save me Mr Patterson go with no).Also,( if i want to do something he will always sing it in front of me!)

Finally, my last reason is that it's rubbish and dosen't make any sence at all,and people don't understand it.My last thing, is that all the gorls don't have it and it's obvious that the girls will win so pick no.

I hope you agree with me, you would be a fool not to.and i will call you a fool all week if i have too.

I am pleased to see that you have taken the time to think of your argument and to try to follow the structure we had been using in our Wreck of the Zanzibar discussions.

You have set out your reasons in paragraphs (although try to remember to not to dive straight in during your opening paragraph). Could you have used 'therefore' instead of so?

I think it could be a close fought argument. However, you have earned another point for the 'No' side of the debate.

It looks like a could be stamping a lot of success cards on Monday as well.

Dear Mr Patterson
NO!!!! We should not buy Minecraft for the iPads!
Firstly dont buy minecraft for the iPads because it costs £4.99 and it would cost LOADS to buy it for all the iPads. Another thing, my sister (Amber) put it on the other day and started dancing and kept putting it on.

My second reason is, the boys would just keep bugging you to, after their work, ask to get an iPad and play on Minecraft, then they'll use up all 32 iPads and if Mr Temple needs them they can't get them as the boys in Year 5 are playing on Minecraft and then they'll ask every single day and rush their work.

Finally, we should NOT get Minecraft because the boys are going crazy about it and they'll dance to it every day in school moreover if they get a chance on the blog they'll no doubt put the minecraft song on and start doing their dancing as usual. It would just get you worked up and you'll feel fed up with the boys asking. "Mr Patterson, can I get an iPad please as I would like to play on Minecraft. I have finished my work too!" They'll just keep asking every day, every week, every month. No doubt, you'll get sick of it. Therefore I'm telling you not to get Minecraft because of those reasons.

You have now read my reasons, you will be a total fool to buy Minecraft for the iPads. Do NOT get Minecraft for the school iPads.

A very well written persuasive piece Tamzin. You make some excellent points and have a nice flow to your writing because you have some well chosen openers and connectives. However, could your opening been a little longer? Perhaps you could have explained what Minecraft is before giving your reasons against it?

I found your reasoning very convincing and actually found myself nodding along as I was reading.

This is another strong case not to install Minecraft and notches up another point for the 'No' argument.

Are the boys really going to give up so easily? Only Shay and Drew have made their cases for 'Yes' at the level of detail we discussed.

1 more point for the 'No' team.

Both Allana and Aron brought in some great persuasive writing today. They had worked hard at the weekend writing their arguments for and against the game.
Aron has earned a point for the YES team with Allana counter arguing and earning a point for the NO team,

At the moment the NO argument is in the lead. However, there have been a lot more children posting comments supporting the YES campaign. Unfortunately, for the yes side, many comments are just far too short.

Arundeep, Adam, Lara, Leah and Alyssa have all given support for the YES side and made some good points. But, you all need to include more writing in your arguments.

Remember to include:
An opening paragraph.
3 or more reasons to support the game (each in their own paragraph)
A concluding paragraph or sentence.

If you can do that, you will earn points for your team.

HINT: Look at Drew and Shay's arguments or come to the class to see the length of writing I am lokking for.

Please remember that I am only counting longer pieces of writing towards the final score. I know what you are all capable of but a lot of your responses seem to have been quickly typed on the iPad.

Please take the time to read Tamzin, Lauren, Drew (Y5) and Hannah's to see the length and quality I am expecting.

Maybe to could draft your writing in notepad first. Then ask Mr Temple if your writing would be enough for a usual Big Writing session before posting.

I know you can do it. Just don't rush to get a quick reply.

Dear mr Patterson,
I think we should get Minecraft because it is brilliant!
Here are my reasons why.
We can use it in any lesson such as to build a church in R.E or in literacy, where we could write about a day in the life of a miner. In numeracy we could learn about the probability of finding diamonds and other precious metals.
I can't believe the girls don't want to get it, I can't believe them!
The girls could do a piece of persuasive writing on a app of there choice.
I hope I have persuaded you to get Minecraft on the iPads.

This is a much more convincing argument Adam because you have taken the time to introduce your writing and give several good reasons to use Minecraft. You have some very sensible suggestions, particularly your numeracy suggestion.

Next time, try to use some sentence openers such as First of all, In addition, Futhermore, Finally etc.

Why we shouldn't get minecraft

Dear mr Patterson,
We shouldn't get minecraft and that's final. First, because it's a waste of money and the game costs around about £4.99 for about 30 iPads which is around about £100 altogether and that far too expensive.

In addition, the game is really boring and there is no point in playing it because all you have to do is build things really it's far too much money for a game that boys like. As well as this, the game is really bad because all you are doing is building with blocks who wants a game with such un-interesting characters. The main reason why you should not get minecraft is us girls hate it!
And what's the point in using a pick axe and a couple building blocks on an iPad when you can do it in REAL life! Who cares about something basically impossible.

As you know there are many more reasons. Due to this, another one of those reasons is girls don't like it and it would be so unfair to let us girls have to put up with playing minecraft. You know mr Patterson I wonder why boys are so interested in minecraft when all it is a rubbish game that has no point to it. Anyway, I don't care how much the boys try to persuade you to pick minecraft because all of us girls that say NO are going to do everything we can to win the debate and say bye bye to minecraft. Minecraft is a waste of your time therefore I won't play it.

Another very detailed entry. Well done Rachel. The Yes team held the lead briefly there but you have swooped back in to tie the scores up again.

I am please that you took the time to include a lot of detail to help make your argument more persuasive and that you have broken up your writing into paragraphs.

I think it's going to be a closely fought battle unless some of the children who have already posted short comments are prepared to up-level their work.

Although there is some brilliant pieces of writing,I would say yes because we could use for RE for example. Would you say yes?
So you could use it for work however we are trying to battle it out with the No people. As well as just using it for work we could use it for free time! Despite it being so hi priced yes are trying to get it can't you give us a chance for yes?

No I don't think we should minecraft on the iPads because it's just building things and it costs 4.99 when you could spend it on school equipment and 4.99 is quite a lot of money however it would cost about £100 for 28 iPads.

Also, I don't think we should have it because it is just building things and that's boring I like a challenge. Another thing, people think it's good because you can blow things up however I thinks that's just stupid.

Furthermore, minecraft is a cartoon would you rather have a life on a cartoon game or get a life in the real world. Also, a lot of people don't listen in lessons already so even more people wouldn't listen if we got minecraft on the iPads and make people actually concentrate.

You keep making some excellent points Lauren. I wish everyone who posted from Years 5 and 6 took the time to see how you were setting out your work and presenting your point of view.

It may help your argument if you worked out the exact cost.

Let's round the game price to £5 and we have 33 iPads. What would the total cost be for the school? (It's more than the £100 you mentioned earlier)

I would love to give you another point but if really like to award them to new posters or people with new pieces of writing. However, if it ends up with tied scores your extra posts will really help your side.

This will tell you about why we should have minecraft on the school I-pads
I think we should have minecraft on the I-pads because it will give us extra work and it might help our thinking also this would be a good idea because if we have minecraft we can do it in our lessons and it might help us do our work a bit quicker. It also does not matter what the price is what matters is that we learn. And we are having fun learning so get us it if you want us to have fun learning.
Also if we have minecraft we could build lots of stuff and it could help us describe because if we are doing something about a castle we can build a castle and it will help us describe and do our work quicker it would also be a good idea because we could do lots of work on it.
Another thing is it might help us behave better because it could be a reward if you are good. You should vote for minecraft if you want it, it will help our work and help us learn.
You now have heard my reasons for saying yes you should get minecraft

This is a great persuasive piece! I really like that you have given some examples in your writing. It really helps make your argument more convincing. I think having fun whilst learning is very important and this is a really powerful part of your argument.

Make sure you check the Extended Learning board in the classroom Friday morning to see if you have changed the scores for the Yes team.

Why we should get Mine craft.The first thing is because it is creative and everyone likes playing on the game and it will also it Mike make some people get on with there work.

The second reason why I would get Mine craft is because it would help us in work and help our education.Another thing we could do stuff about Mine craft in science and topic also geography.

Finally the last reason I would get Mine craft is we could do work on it in lessons please get it on the I pads it might even some people work on it harder because they are interested in it.

Why I think we should get minecraft,
First of all I think we should get minecraft is because the game could help us with our education because we could use it in literacy,science and also numeracy it could help us in our literacy by using it to build houses it could help us in our numeracy because when we use blocks and bricks and every thing else you use to build things like houses and castles we could measure the blocks and bricks. We could use it in science to see if a diamond is harder than a stone sord!

Another reason, why I think we should get minecraft is because it would make some people work harder than they normally do so they could get on minecraft quicker therefore I think we should get minecraft.

Also, we could use it at privallige time therefore I think we should get minecraft.Vote for minecraft!!!

Why we should not have minecraft

This will tell you all about not having minecraft.First of all it is £4.99 that is alot of money also we should not pick MINE CRAFT

My first reason is that it's more like a game than actual work.In addition to this, It won't help you with anything. Therefore we should pick NO!.As well as this Mine craft is a boys thing however girls will sstill beat the boys

My second reason is that it maybe popular to boys however not to girls.Also, boys may be in the lead but I'm going to do some homework and not let minecraft win. As well as this,minecraft dosen't make any sense and is very confusing and looks abit fiddly.

Last of all, now my sister (Jada)is in to it(oh no!) Now that it is 14-11 I have got a letter and a poster it will make 14-13.

I hope you say No because if you don't you would be a fool

What a lot of debate there has been over this app. You have all made me very curious about mine craft. Clearly most of the boys love it and most of the girls hate it. What would convince me is more information on what you can learn from it. How can it improve your literacy and numeracy? Adam has given me some ideas (although it took him a while to get round to it!) but I think I need more! Something for free time .... Just how much free time do you have Cailen?!

This should tell you why we should have Minecraft.
I think we should have Minecraft because it is a fun game plus we can use it in privalige time if we are on the ipads. It can get addicttive but in a good way.

We could use it in lessons because in R.E we are lerning about churchs so we could odvisously build some of them.
If we start to learn about building under ground or on the ground,
we coule just turne o the specle ipads and just go on them and go on to the poplel, usefull, outstanding, stunning,breth tacking mindecraft.
science we are lerning about plants so we can use Minecraft because you can builed cropes with some of the bloces that are on the list if the things the you can use.
It has pictures for the list of things you can use.

please can we have Minecraft on the ipads m Patterson lots of us love it and the people who whant it will be very gratfull if you will get Mindecraft.
