Today we prepared and presented our Fairtrade presentations based on the point of views suggested in the Fairtrade post below. It was very interesting to see how we worked together to produce our final presentation. Each group has a presentation creator, a researcher, a blogger and a motivator all with different roles to help achieve the end result. I was very impressed with how some groups used each role to support another and produce some high quality research. We ended up with: 3 power points, 2 iMovies and 2 piccollages. Some presentations were supported with additional posters as well. It was an excellent way for us to share what we had found and to help us understand the concept of Fairtrade. Well done everyone! This week, Brooke has managed to give herself a little bit of time to continue to practice her numeracy skills on 'Mathletics'.
So far she is the only member of the class to have achieved a certificate during the half term holidays with a fantastic 2480 points. Well done Brooke, See me after Grinton for a Success Card Stamp! Year 5 and 6 children celebrate with the winning cup after a tough battle for first place in the CNS High Five netball competition. 
 A superb effort from Year 5 last week! Every single one of us achieved our weekly certificate from Mathletics including 7 silver! Brilliant Last week saw a fantasitc performance from the whole of Year 5. 31 of us achievled our Mathletics Bronze award for the week, and we also had one Silver award as well (for achieving 5 Bronze certificates)    Today we have been finding out about ratios and looking for them in packets of sweets.

Today was fancy dress day across the whole school to help raise money for Children in Need. There were lots of spotty efforts in Year 5. Which one is your favourite? 
 This week, we have spent some of our topic time looking at the popular iPad game 'Temple Run'. We have used the game as a writing stimulus, thinking about the setting and the character. We have planned our own adventure story in the style of the game and have used our Big Writing session to produce a final piece of work. Lesson 1 In our first session, we played the game and thought carefully about where the game could be set. We decided that it was most likely set in a temple somwhere in a far away jungle or rainforest. To find out more about this, we used the excellent webiste www.oddizzi.com and found out a bit more about jungles and rainforests around the world. Here are just a few examples of the research we completed courtesy of Jamie M, Alicia and Brooke:  Lesson 2 In our second session, we returned to the game to take a closer look at the main character and to revisit the setting. We thought carefully about what the main character is like and the type of person who would find themselves in a far away temple, searching for treasure. To record our thought and prepare us for writing later in the week, we create an image using the app 'Skitch'. Our image showed our thoughts on the main character as well as additional ideas for the setting.  Lesson 3 For our third Temple Run lesson we began to pull our ideas together and plan for writing our own Temple Run themed adventure story. After watching a short video montage of Indiana Jones action clips, we used PicCollage to create our own story plan. As you can see from some of the examples below, plenty of imagination has been used and I am sure our stories will be an excellent read.   Lesson 4  "Examples of our writing. Here are just some of the fantastic openers from our very own Temple Run themed stories. Alicia Deep inside the abandoned jungle in America, enormous green leaves cover everything. A beautiful multi-coloured parrot rummages about in the leaves looking for left over exotic fruits. The weather is as hot as someone holding lava. Fortunately, the huge green leaves covered the huge temple that was inside the waterfall. The temple was golden. Hidden doors to keep the gold safe and traps waiting for their next victim. Tia Lost inside the Indian jungle, the trees stood up taller then ever. At the hear, leaves falled down swiftly like the wind was guiding it. The baby elephant sucked the water up its trunk then dived down and played in the water. The sun glazed down, everything looked like gold. It was like a hot volcano about erupt was burning my skin. Hidden beneath all the trees stood an ancient temple made by our ancestors gleaming in the sun. The old shining stairs had inscriptions covered in, nobody could read it. The temple roof was falling in however it was still gleaming like mad. Rachel Lost in the feather jungle, the mud was as squelchy as sinking sand and as thick as dirty water. Beautiful peacocks fluttering their rainbow wings in the soft blowing breeze. However, rain poured down your spine as if it were a waterfall, despite there being humongous dens in the trees covering your soft hair. Deeple in the centre of the jungle, stood a golden temple as pretty as the queens crown. The stone door enchanting you and giving you a hint of what beautiful gold and silver could have been hidden at the very point. Soon the silky curtains blew in the wind they were covered in luscious jewels. As well as this, the gold temple was covered in lovely pink blossoms and emeralds like the icing on a cake. References:

This week, we decided to put our skills to the test by taking a walk around the local area. Equipped with an OS Map and a handful of 6-figure grid references we set off on our quest to find out exactly what was at our referenced points. Working in small groups, we were successful and, as you can see from some of the photographs, had a great time in the process.   Use this fantastic song, performed by Year 5, to help you remember what mean, mode, median and range are. Thankyou to Mrs Ovington for the suggestion. X-Factor here we come!  Last night, the girls football team took part in two league matches. Instead of simply standing by between matches, they put their ICT skills to good use creating this fantastic video of themselves in action. Well done to our own Year 5 girls, Aime, Hannah and Brooke who took part.

This superb advert from Sky TV is full of wonderful descriptive language, that builds up the image of a journey through the woods. Can you write your own description? Here are some ideas. 1. Describe a journey through the woods (as in the advert). 2. Describe a storm (either on a ship or an island). 3. Describe a haunted house, graveyard or both. You could try writing your piece in Microsoft Word first and then copying it to the blog. The path slowly disappears as we descend deeper into the woods. The gnarled and twisted trees groan as an icy wind tears away the last of autumn's golden leaves. As night falls, the forest comes to life. All around there is a chorus as creatures awaken. Chittering in the trees, rustling in the bracken. Inky black eyes glisten in the shadows. We have been working hard developing grid method for multiplication this week.
