As part of our World Cup topic this term, we have been studying how life in Brazil compares to our own lives in Tanfield Lea.
As part of this, we have discovered that many Brazilians live in favelas. In our Art & Design lessons we have created our own representations of the Brazilian favelas which have been painted as part of the 'Favela Painting' project.

Drew has been looking carefully about World Cup teams, particularly the life expectancy (how old you can expect to live to). He has discovered that African nationals have a much lower average life expectancy.

For example,

In the Ivory Coast, you could expect to live to 48, Nigeria 47 and South Africa 49.

He now wants to know why this is!?

At the start of our World Cup topic, we thought about what the world was like!? Sticking post it notes on the board (that quickly fell off), here is what we came up with.

This is to be an on-going post. So please add additional thoughts to this thread as we find out more about the world.

We have spent a large part of our topic this half term comparing our own lives with countries around the world with a strong emphasis on the food we eat and why we eat it.

As well as realising that we are very fortunate for the variety of food we have and the opportunities we have, we also realised that this is not the same for everyone around the world.

This led us into the idea of Fair Trade, what it is, what it means and what we can do to help and respect others by changing our own actions and habits.

We have competed a lot of research (through the fantastic www.oddizzi.com), have presented our own arguments and have produced a range of work. Much of this can be seen on our 'Fair Trade Dispaly' just outside of the year 5 classroom.

Further thoughts: Fairtrade doesn't just have to be about food. Can you research any more about Fairtrade and see how else we can have an impact. Where else can we look out for the Fairtrade logo? Success cards will be stamped for anything you can bring me.

As part of our Global Learning, we have been looking at Fairtrade. Today we created adverts or posters to share the message and encourage others to look for the Fairtrade logo.

As you can see we had lots of fantastic designs - keep your eye out for some of then appearing around school.

Today we prepared and presented our Fairtrade presentations based on the point of views suggested in the Fairtrade post below.

It was very interesting to see how we worked together to produce our final presentation. Each group has a presentation creator, a researcher, a blogger and a motivator all with different roles to help achieve the end result. I was very impressed with how some groups used each role to support another and produce some high quality research. We ended up with:

3 power points, 2 iMovies and 2 piccollages. Some presentations were supported with additional posters as well.

It was an excellent way for us to share what we had found and to help us understand the concept of Fairtrade.

In our lesson on Monday we will be considering Fair Trade and what we can do in our own lives to help make a difference in other countries around the world.

We have had a lot of good discussion surrounding this topic thanks to our international visitors. As part of our lessons we have been considering the questions posed in the earlier post, particularly why we eat and where food comes from.

This has led to comparisons between our own lives and others in less fortunate circumstances around the world.

Here are some of our findings:

Our discussion on 'why we eat' led to lots of interesting suggestions. We could also see a clear difference between wealthier countries and those with less money.

Working in groups, investigating photographs from around the world and deciding on answers to. 'Why do we eat?'

We represented some of our ideas as paper plate messages for a display board.

In the following session we thought about where we get out food from and how this contrasts in different countries.

Following our Mary's Meal Charity Single before Christmas, we will be beginning to consider some of the issues surrounding food in the World.

This week there are a number of key questions that we will be considering.

1. Why do we need food? (Think about why our bodies need the different types of food we eat as well as eating for pleasure - because food tastes nice)

2. Where do we get our food from? (Think about all of the places you get your food from).

3. Do people in different countries get their food from the same places?

4. Does everyone eat food for the same reasons?

Success card stamps for anyone who tries to answer some of these questions. You could wait until after our lessons on Tuesday and Thursday before you answer.

As part of our Christmas project, Year 5 have recorded their own version of Band Aid's 'Feed the World'.
After watching a moving documentary based on the charity work of Mary's Meals, we decided that all money raised from CD and music video sales would go to the world hunger charity.

We are very proud to announce that we have raised £50.00 for Mary's Meals and have done our best to make a small contribution towards the issue of world hunger this Christmas time.

CDs are still available at £1 for the CD single and £2 for the data CD containing the mp3 and music video.

Our classroom was in desperate need in decoration in preparation for Christmas. Therefore, this afternoon, we created our own paper chain decorations. However, they weren't what many people would expect because we took some time before we started to connect our decorations to our recent research linked to our Christmas single. (Feed the World)

We started off by thinking about what Christmas was like for us, in our own homes. As you can see, we all have lots to look forward to.

However, as we know from our Oddizzi work earlier in the week, life in other countries is not always the same as on in our own. Many people are a lot less fortunate than ourselves. We then thought about what it might be like at Christmas in these areas and compared them to what we expecting our own to be like.

We also thought about some of the lyrics from our Christmas single, Feed the World, to help generate some ideas.

We could clearly see that we had a lot to be thankful and grateful for in our own lives. Our groups then suggested some of the things we would stop to say thank you for on Christmas day. We also suggested some of the changes we could make to show greater appreciation of the issues in other parts of the world.

With all of this in mind, we then created the links for our Christmas decorations. Each link contains a message explaining something we will be thankful for this Christmas or one thing we would like to change to show appreciation of our own situation.

Everybody worked very hard to complete their decorations.

Our Christmas single, Feed the World, will be available to buy from Thursday 12th December with 50% going towards a hunger based charity (to be decided by the class).

As you know, we have been recording our own version of Band Aid's 'Feed the world' from 1984.

However, we have not discussed why we are learning this song and how we can use of music to help raise awareness of one of the World's issues.

World Hunger:
In some countries, there is not enough food to feed the people who live there. Our song will hopefully help to raise little bit of money to help these people.
