Drew has been looking carefully about World Cup teams, particularly the life expectancy (how old you can expect to live to). He has discovered that African nationals have a much lower average life expectancy. For example, In the Ivory Coast, you could expect to live to 48, Nigeria 47 and South Africa 49. He now wants to know why this is!? Success card stamps to anyone who can complete a facts page or poster explains why life expectancy is different around the world. Good luck This week you will be working in small groups to answer the question:
What is Brazil like? You will have to choose how you want to find your answer but I have provided some links to websites and video clips to get you started. Once we have had some time to try to find an answer, each group will present it's findings to the rest of the class. Remember there isn't a correct answer. It is up to you and your group to form your own opinions on what you find. Remember to question what you discover and ask why things are the way they are. Good luck and have fun. They are great! In Scratch, we have been learning to code simple games. Here is my example called 'Flappy Patterson'. Feel free to magpie any code ideas, but don't be put off my game got quite complicated once I wanted to add levels and have a high score. Good luck, its not as simple as it looks. Here is the link if the game doesn't appear below http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22713829/ At the start of our World Cup topic, we thought about what the world was like!? Sticking post it notes on the board (that quickly fell off), here is what we came up with. This is to be an on-going post. So please add additional thoughts to this thread as we find out more about the world. As Wednesday's Mathletics efforts come to an end, we will have completed 3 out of 7 of the week's challenge days.
I am shocked and thrilled to announce that we currently have 4 children with over 10,000 points (that's around 1,000 correct answers each!!) To put that into perspective, 4 of you have earned more points than Mrs Davis' entire class so far! There are also lots and lots of you, adding your own scores, making our team effort a superb one! Can you keep it up? I'm really looking forward to seeing our final scores and who the overall champion will be! I will have to get a few extra prizes as I am extremely impressed! Keep up the hard work Year 5! Today, we investigated the features of news reports through careful investigation of articles from 'First News'.
Once we had identified the features, we worked as groups to create posters showing examples from the articles we had read. We then presented our findings to the clas! Absolutely fantastic, and record breaking, efforts from many of us this week on Mathletics! Aron 9th in the UK (47th in the world) and Drew smashed the class record book finishing 1st in the UK and 10th in the World. This term, we are going to learn about coding (creating a set of instructions that a computer can follow to complete a task). Coding is a very important skill that is essential to so many of the things we do in our everyday lives. We will be using a coding site called 'Scratch': http://scratch.mit.edu/ Why not play around with Scratch at home and see what you can do? Who knows, one day you could create the next Facebook, make millions with your own games such as Candy Crush or Flappy Bird or work for a games company and be part of huge hits such as Call of Duty and Minecraft. Today, Year 5 & 6 worked together with pupils from Brandon on a range of activities that tested their team working skills. In the photos shown below, groups had to build the strongest structure using just news paper and Sellotape. Their finished products were then tested to see how much weight they could hold on their own before collapsing. Well done to everyone who took part. There were lots of varied and interesting designs. The results were: The Boss Bridge - Group F - 4.7kg The Leaning Tower of Newspaper - Group N - 3kg The Fabulous People - Group H - 1.9kg The Tower of 'K' Bridge - Group K - 1.6kg Bridge to Terribithia - Group O - 1kg The Pillar Bridge - Group D - 700g The Platinum Gate Bridge - Group M - 500g Branfield Bridge - Group E - 500g T and B - Group I - 300g Brandon Lea Bridge - Group C - 250g The Epic Bridge - Group J - 200g Terrific Ten - Group B - 200g BT Bridge - Grouo G - 150g Lightning Strighk - Group A - 100g In The Information Tower - Group L - 50g Well done to Group F with their winning design, The Boss Bridge, which held a massive 4.7kg before collapsing! The final leaderboard. This morning, Year 5 (with the help of some of their parents) created their entries into the egg decorating competition. There were some very colourful entries and as you can see lots a different ideas. I wonder who the winner will be? We are going to be writing some book reviews for a competition next term. However, to do this we all need to have read some of the books that we are going to review.
Therefore, we now have a large pile of books waiting to be checked out and read carefully. For the moment, all you need to do is sign out one of the books and read the whole story. (I will explain how we will check them out). If you want to keep any notes while you read about the characters, settings, plot, your feelings about the book, its style etc, that would would be really useful for your future review. Our reviews will then be shared with other schools. Your choices are: 'Bill's New Frock' by Anne Fine 'Shadow' by Michael Morpurgo 'Billionaire Boy' by David Walliams TOP TIP: Read the Blub of all three books before you decide which one you would like to read. Please do not post any comments here yet... we are saving the space for when we write our reviews. |
